What is Writing Your Sitcom?

James explains the ins and outs of the course.

BBC Sitcom writer James Cary takes you through the process.

James started out in the late nineties not knowing what he was doing. He wanted to write sitcoms. But back then there was no internet, and no courses.

So he figured it out.

He must have done something right because he's written or co-written over 150 scripts of BBC Television and Radio in that time, as well as script editing plenty of others.

In this course, James tells you what you need to know and, crucially, doesn't tell you what you don't need to know.

Tell me more about the course.

James has been teaching people about sitcom writing for years. But it's always been in bitesized chunks, in talks, one-day courses, blogposts and podcasts.

Here, the whole thing has been put together in one course designed to take you through each stage of developing characters, plotting and planning the episode before writing the actual pilot script.

That's the aim: for you to finish this course with a sitcom script that isn't just your best work and shows what you can do, but demonstrates your voice which is ultimately what the industry is wanting to hear.

Characters

Characters are the driving force of the sitcom. They're the reason people come back week after week. But how do we create compelling characters that feel fresh and contemporary? We find out in the course.

Your Voice

The comedy industry isn't just looking for technical competence, but clear voices and perspectives. Your script needs to demonstrate you have a voice and something to offer. James will show you how.

Hard Graft

There aren't any short cuts. James has been there, done that, been given the notes and had to do the rewrites. Writing that pilot script is hard. But there are basic errors that can be easily avoided once you know what they are. James will reveal them in the course.

There are a lot of other scripts out there

Is your script really going to stand out from the thousands of others scripts out there?

And there are hundreds more from working professionals already in the industry.

It's hard to get noticed. But a really tight pilot script is the first and most crucial step.

Invest in that step, save your self months of hard work or years of learning the hard way.
